LITERATURE REVIEW: Divorce is an event that can change the lives of all members involved. It is, most times, a series of negative events that eventually lead to the separation. Although it may be necessary in certain situations, separation can cause great stress and can impose harmful effects on children. As Aaron Brownlee stated in the Journal of Undergraduate Research, prior studies have shown that lack of cohesion and with no ability to express thoughts openly in the family contributed to negative effects of a divorce (Brownlee, p.7). The lack of support from parents to educate children about the cause of the divorce and allowing open discussions leads a child to feel neglected and will result in negative behavior, according to Brownlee†¦show more content†¦In her article, Shansky points out Sun and Li’s study done in 2012 on the psychological well being of adolescents before and after their parents divorce (Shansky, p.73). The authors measured self esteem and locu s of control before and after the divorce to compare the results and prove causality. It was confirmed that the divorce affects children both before and after. Furthermore, the authors concluded that children should receive counselling during the periods before and after the divorce, which does not happen for most children (Shansky, p.74).The combination of a series of life changing events due to the divorce and a psychological illness such as anorexia, leaves a child with the capacity to cause more harm to themselves. This population of adolescents with anorexia and divorced parents is unique to the literature because there have been no studies that link these two events together. Anorexic adolescents with divorced parents require a different method when treating their psychological treatment because of complications with the family-based therapy method as treatment.
